Open days 2017

The Musical Box has been open and running for over 12 years now.

Our success is from bringing contemporary music lessons to people of all ages around the Oxfordshire and Warwickshire areas. It is quite difficult to get a music school up and running, especially when our studios are located in more rural areas.

Each year, we host our annual ‘Open Days’ where we open our doors to the public for people to come in and see how a Rock School works. We offer tours of each of our studios, meet-and-greet with our teachers and a free 10-minute taster session on an instrument of choice.

Over the past three years, we have tried a few different approaches, in hoping to gain more attendance at both of our locations.

These Open Days started on a single Saturday at each of the studios, the week before our Annual party, which was held in August. Attendance was actually pretty good at these events, although there was some down time for teachers and staff when people did not come in, especially as our Bicester studio is pretty quiet on a Saturday. This did work quite well, as the Stratford studio is pretty busy with Band rehearsals and lessons on Saturdays.

Last year, we tried to host our Open Days, still on single Saturdays at each of the studios, but earlier in the Summer. Both of these days had low numbers, much to our dismay.

We decided to evaluate the situation at both studios and try something new, to hopefully get even more new people through the door.

We decided that this year it would be a fun idea to have an ‘Open Week’ and have multiple evenings at each of our studios, while all instruments are being taught and teachers are in, so that any prospective student can see a more accurate picture of how we work, week to week, here at TMB.

It was our idea that students would be more excited if the studio was in the full swing of activities when they walked through the door.

We decided to try something new this year as well, in trying a referral scheme. We left cards on the table at our studio for students to take to friends and/or family who expressed desire to start lessons. In our Teacher and Studio Evaluations, which were filled out by our students and parents, we heard that many of our students knew people who wanted to start lessons. If we had a person show up with a referral card, whoever’s name was on the back would be given a gift prize as a Thank You from TMB for helping us find new people!

If that person signed on for a block of lesson, the referee would then be awarded a free lesson towards the next block!

Now, we are currently sat in the last days of our new trial way of doing Open Days….

It has not been as successful as we had hoped- thus far. We have had a few people walk through the doors, take tours and have their taster lessons. We consider each of these a success, as we have reached out and found new students.

Although, due to the smaller number, we have decided to go back to our original way of running Open Days. We will go back to having one large event, later in the Summer. Hopefully the warmer weather might bring people through the doors.

Our biggest challenge has simply been getting the information OUT to the public. Both of our studios, as mentioned before, are in more rural locations and some people have had difficulty finding them.  We have placed many signs in the surrounding areas with dates and locations of the events, which we hope people can see when they drive around. We also had flyers which were handed out to people, used as referral cards by students, and also placed in mailboxes.

Even despite the lower attendance in our Open Days, we are still hopeful that the Summer will bring on some more new students.

This event has left us with a few fun ideas for current students as well, so keep an eye out here and in studio for more details!

See you next week
