Be in a TMB band by Tim

As we gear up at here at TMB HQ for a campaign to encourage more of our talented students to join a band it seemed like a good time to talk about the various benefits and downright awesomeness of doing such a thing! At The Musical Box's two studios - Stratford Upon Avon and Bicester - we teach one-to-one lessons in drums, guitar, bass, singing, piano, keyboards and ukulele. We have always believed that learning to play any instrument is one of the best things you can do in life.........so what could be even better than that? Why, playing with other people of course! Sharing your love of music with friends and choosing, learning, performing and writing songs together has so many physical and  mental health benefits and we're going to take a look at some of them in this blog.

Friendship - wether you start out playing with people you already know or start from scratch with people you've never met before, being part of a band can be a real bonding experience. You work together, learn together and support each other in a real team effort.

Learning - developing your technique on your instrument is reinforced when you're practising new skills with your band mates. It can be very inspiring and exciting to see others growing in this way and to know that you are a part of it too.

Self-confidence - many people put off learning to play an instrument because they don't think they'll be able to do it - learning to play with others is a great way to take the pressure off yourself! As you work together to learn new songs and build up a set your confidence grows each time you get together in the rehearsal room.

Motivation - learning and playing together as a group does wonders for your motivation. Sometimes it can be hard settle into a regular practice routine on your own but when you're part of a band you'll want to have your parts nailed and not let the others down!

Social well-being - there is often a huge social aspect to playing in a band - when a group of musicians work together they are sharing a common goal as well as a common interest and it's these connections that help to develop friendships that can last a lifetime.

Organisational skills - being part of a band can help develop your skill set outside of playing music - you will be thinking about all kinds of other things like getting to rehearsals, being on time, setting up your gear - and making sure you have everything you need!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about the many and varied ways in which being part of a band and sharing the experience of playing music with others can improve your general well being...........but don't just sit there thinking about it! Grab your guitar/drum sticks/keyboard/ mic, get out there and do it! Play music and make the world a better place.......

Love and count-ins,

Tim
