Music and mental health

It's Children's Mental Health Week, so what better time to talk about how music supports children to tap into their emotions, relax, have fun and release feel-good endorphins into their systems?

Research shows that listening to and playing a musical instrument can act as a stress management tool. At The Musical Box, we have always argued that music education is vital, not only for the benefits outlined above, but also to help with confidence, social skills and improve learning in other subjects too.

This week, an all-party parliamentary committee into music education announced their belief that schools must provide a high quality music education to achieve good Ofsted ratings. We completely support this. At a time when entries to GCSE Music have dropped by 17% and schools are struggling to survive amid budget cuts, music offers a golden opportunity to address rising stress levels in the classroom.
